Kiesha Weippeart (Abrahams)
April 22, 2004 - July 14, 2010

A child attends school for only five days during the school year and though inquiries are made, nothing serious is done to find out why? Kiesha, who was in kindergarten, had missed so much school that when she was reported missing, The Education Department wouldn't even comment about why she had not been at school or why nothing was done to find out why. The police said they had talked to some Government agencies about her absences and general well being.

Kiesha Weippeart was a beautiful little curly haired girl who could light up the world by smiling. Christie Abrahams, her mother reported Kiesha missing on a Sunday when she claims to have noticed that her daughter was not in bed after having put her to bed about 9:30 the night before. Christie told police that when she woke up the door was partly open and Kiesha was gone.

Family and friends commented to police on how they had not seen Kiesha for a period of about three weeks, which was around the time her half brother, Levi had been born. Police began building a time line to figure out when Kiesha had last been seen by anyone other than her mother and stepfather, Rob Smith. Jason Smith, Rob's brother, said he had not seen Kiesha since the birth of his nephew and claimed that Rob and Christie were both so grief stricken they couldn't talk to anyone about it. Rob's mother, Rebecca Smith, said that they were all aware of rumors that Kiesha had been missing for weeks instead of days and they didn't care what people thought:

"We know the truth and the police know the truth. They can't talk. They just can't
get the words out. It's so upsetting. They don't know what's happened to her"

Rebecca said that her son had raised Kiesha as his own and he was devastated about her missing. Christie and Rob had been together for about four years and had two children together. Kiesha's biological father, Chris Weippeart was cleared in his daughters disappearance. On August 5, 2010 a candlelight vigil was held for Kiesha who was still missing at the time.

More than eight months after she disappeared, Kiesha's little body was found by police when they set up a trap for Christie, who was 28 and Rob who was 31. About 1:00 a.m., on what would have been Kiesha's seventh birthday, the couple was arrested near the grave they had dug to hide her body. This comes months after the
police used Luminol and found blood all over Kiesha's room:

"The blood is on the floors, doors, lounge and bed sheets"

The blood was not visible until the police used Luminol:

"This product revealed larger areas of blood that appeared to have been cleaned"

Police found a suspicious text message from the night before Kiesha went missing. Supposedly that night they were home watching "The Golden Compass" with their children. Neither of the two could explain the text message.

It was revealed on the news that Kiesha was murdered by her mother and stepfather on July 14 and that she had died after being thrown against a wall and knocked unconscious. Kiesha had blood coming out of her ears and even though she needed medical attention, she was given a shower and put to bed while she was still wet. Police say that the next morning Kiesha was dead and her body remained in the house until July 18th when she was put into a suitcase and taken to the bush land in Shalvey and buried. Kiesha was reported missing on August 1.

Rob Smith and Christie Abrahams were charged with the murder of Kiesha. On December 16, 2011, Rob Smith plead guilty to manslaughter and the murder charge was dropped. Rob was also charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder. Christie had not plead at that time.

Chris Weippeart was hospitalized with Diabetes complications when he heard that Rob and Christie were trying to get out of jail to attend his daughters funeral, he said he would do whatever it took to keep them away:

"My family are the ones left to deal with all of this and arrange the best send-off
for Kiesha that she deserves, and I'm telling you, they are not coming"

Elizabeth Weippeart, Chris's mother said she was infuriated thinking about it. Rob and Christie's families felt differently:

"I think they should be able to go, they are innocent until proven guilty"
Rebecca Smith

Rebecca said she had been in touch with her son since his arrest and that he and Christie were doing okay though they had been refused bail. A spokesperson for the Corrective Services said that neither of the two had even applied for a day leave since a funeral date had not been set and that it was unlikely they would be allowed to leave the jail to attend. A funeral had been delayed due to testing needing to be done on the remains of this precious little Angel. It would take over a year for Kiesha's remains to be released for burial. I can't even begin to imagine what her family was going through during that time.

Chris had not been to the site where his daughter had been dumped by the two people who murdered her, until that day:

"Just standing here, feels like that she's here"

In the place where she was left after she was murdered, people had left messages and toys as a memorial to Kiesha.

Looking for updates to see if these two have been sentenced, I am unable to find anything.

I would like to thank Kim Greenway for sending me this story and for helping to keep Kiesha's memory alive.

In February of 2012, Robert Smith entered pleas of guilty to manslaughter and being an accessory after the fact of murder. In March of 2012, Christi was supposed to be in court to face the charges against her. Christi was not there to enter her plea, instead a committal hearing was set for July 16th and 17th, of 2012. Alison Anderson, who is President of a group called "Children In Silence" said:

"It's been a long delay but at the end of the day, it's justice. It's good to see them
forward with the case. Like others in the community, I have a lot of anger
and frustration, but
things are moving"

On May 2, 2012, it was reported that Christi Anne Abrahams, who was 29 years old at the time, would face a trial on charges of murder. Christi tried to plead guilty to manslaughter and interfering with the remains of Kiesha, in the case of Kiesha's death, however, the Crown did not accept the plea and plans to prosecute Christi on the manslaughter charge would proceed with a trial being scheduled for June 17 of 2013.

Thank you so much to Tammy for making me aware of this update. I continue to be so grateful to those who are willing to help in that and all areas of this site.

On May 3, 2013, it was reported that Robert Smith had plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of gross criminal negligence and that he had been a part of her murder. Justice Megan Latham sentenced him to a maximum of 16 years and he would not be eligible for parole until he had served 12 years. Justice Latham said that what he had done to Kiesha was among the most serious type of crime and that his decision to burn her body was a particularly heinous act add that his choice had been cowardly and was only served to protect him:

"These were not spontaneous, ill-conceived acts carried out in panic, such as
are usually
encountered by the courts when dealing with this offense"

Justice Latham added that when most people come across a child who is unconscious, they will help the child by getting medical attention and that only the most callous and unfeeling person would not. Robert would be eligible for release in 2023 with the time her had already served. It was also reported that a woman who would remain anonymous for legal reasons would be facing trial in the murder of Kiesha, later in the year.

I want to thank Tam and Ann for bringing this update to my attention. I can't express enough how much it helps me to have so many people willing to help honor these children.

In July of 2013, Christi Anne Abrahams, who was 30 years old at the time, was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for what she had done to Kiesha. It turns out that the sentence was given exactly three years to the day that Christi and robert had taken Kiesha's body out of the house and buried it.

People were upset about the verdict, saying it was a cop out. Justice Ian Harrison said that this decision had to be made without emotions getting in the way, saying that what Christi had done to Kiesha was partly due to the fact that Christi had been abused by her own father when she was a child and the system had not provided her with the care she had needed:

"There is a tragic and terrible redolence in the present case with the offender's own
and frightening childhood. The death of the deceased is the foreseeable
and predictable consequence
of preventable, cyclic abuse. The offenders failings are
mirrored in the  failings of others"

Taking into consideration that she had been abused and that she suffered from an intellectual disability and saying that there was not enough proof that even though Christi had intended to hurt Kiesha, she never intended to kill her, Justice Ian Harrison said:

"The offense was not premeditated, but a spontaneous act of violence and anger"

I am left shocked by this. It sounds like this man is saying it's okay to kill your children while abusing them, as long as you only intended to HURT them and not kill them. While it is sad that Christi was abused as a child, it is hard to feel sorry for her considering she didn't get help for herself and instead did to her daughter what she hated being done to her when she was a child. When will people who were abused as children STOP using that as an excuse to repeat the abuse on others?

Thank you to Thomas for sending me this update.

UPDATE: December 17, 2014 (Thank you to Cat for this additional information)

Information came out after her death about how Chris Weippeart had reported Christi to DOCS for biting their 15 month old daughter on the shoulder. Kiesha was removed from their home after a hospital stay and she wasn't returned for 18 months. Christie had been convicted of assault and had to go to a parental care course and she had to go to anger management counseling. In December of 2006, Kiesha went home to her mother only to be taken away again less than a year later when she had been taken to the hospital and a nurse saw bruising to her face. Kiesha was questioned by DOCS without her mother present, the very next day:

"Kiesha was wearing a hat and kept turning her face away from the caseworker"

While Kiesha could not say where the bruise on her face had come from, she was able to say that a cigarette burn had come from her mother by saying "Mum hit there" and "Mum did that". It appears that not much was done at the point because complaints kept coming in from family members, neighbors and others who said that Kiesha had new bruises quite often and Kiesha only went to school four times. Witnesses said that even if Christie was talking to someone and raised her arm or hand for any reason, Kiesha would flinch.

People said that the reason Christie didn't like Kiesha was that she looked like her father and that one month before Kiesha died, Christie had called her father, Rodney Jones, saying that she couldn't handle the child any more. It was arranged for Kiesha to go live with her grandfather, but Christie delayed the move for a couple of weeks, it was, of course, too late by then.
