Miley Gust
- February 2, 2012

Esther G. Edwards-Gust, a 28 year old elementary school teacher from Alaska took off from her home after she and her boyfriend, 19 year old Richard Tilden Jr. were indicted on charges in the death of her three year old daughter, Miley.

Miley and her sister Macy were locked in their bedroom with the window open supposedly to air out the room after the girls wet the bed. The temperature would reach 30 degrees below zero that night. Miley and Macy both suffered from hypothermia that night. Richard was the baby sitter for Esther when she worked, though that night she was not working and she and Richard opened the window and closed the door, which was not able to be opened from the inside due to the door door latch having been removed and they walked away.

Esther claims that when she left for work that morning, the girls were both asleep in their beds At about 12:30 p.m. on February 2, Richard woke up, after a night of drinking and noticed the girls both had accidents in the night and he went in to change them. Richard noticed that Miley was not responding to him. Both of the children were flown to a hospital in Anchorage, where Miley later died.

In the home, police found two empty bottles of whiskey which Richard admitted to buying and drinking the night
before. Richard was arrested that same day on charges of assault and even after being in custody for hours,  his
blood alcohol level was 0.164, which is over twice the legal limit for driving. Esther was in custody for a short time
after she went to be with her daughter, Macy. Richard and Esther were both arrested on assault charges, but they
were allowed to leave at the request of the District Attorney

A warrant was issued for Esther's arrest and she is still on the run. Richard has a bond amount of $100,000. and
is still in jail. Both face charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

In April of 2013, Richard Tilden Jr. was sentenced to only seven, short years for what happened to Miley. Residents of Barrow were upset with this ridiculous sentence, as they should have been:

"A little girl died because there was drinking gong on. And not just her, there's
lots of kids suffering"

Marjorie Solomon - Social Services Director

District Attorney, Mike Gray said:

"It's not the message that a child's life in Barrow or in Fairbanks or in Anchorage or
anywhere else is only worth seven years. That's not the question. The question is
what was a fair resolution? It was something that was not done in anger"

REALLY? What kind of an IDIOT thinks like this? This child suffered and died if it was done in anger or not, her
sister suffered, if it was in anger or not. The fair resolution was for this man to NEVER get out of prison for what he did to these girls.

Residents tied more than 100 purple ribbons in the town to speak out against violence against children. The guide lines for sentencing Richard were that he could receive ten years for criminally negligent homicide and up to five years for third degree assault for what he did to the surviving sibling. The sentence approved for him was to serve 14 years, with seven years suspended, ten years probation, not drink at all, not enter homes with bootleggers in them and not baby sit any children under the age of 11. Richard is forbidden to have any contact with Macy at all, who is said to be fine after what happened to her and her sister Miley.

At this time, May 7, 2013, I am unable to find an update on Esther or if she has been found or not. My thanks to Sara for this most recent update on Richard.

Checking again on June 10, 2014, Esther has yet to be found.

UPDATE: February 26, 2015 (Thank you Betty for this update)

In September of 2014, the trial of Esther Edwards-Gust, by then 30 years old, was getting started and a jury would be the ones to decide what would happen to her. Esther had been arrested for violating the conditions of her release when the Office Of Children's Services was called by a child who said her mother was passed out. The VPSO arrived and found Esther passed out with a blood alcohol content of .034.

Esther's charges in relation to the death of Miley are two counts of second degree assault, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide and her Lawyer would be Rex Butler with a court date set before Judge Michael Jeffery in two weeks.

In October of 2014 Esther Edwards-Gust was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter and second degree assault in the death of Miley Gust. It seems the felony charges had all been reduced to reckless endangerment, which is a class A misdemeanor and Esther was found guilty and would serve 365 days in prison with credit for the time she had already served, she would have to complete treatment at Ernie Turner Center and she would be on probation until October of 2015.
