Xavier Becerra Martinez
- October 19, 2012

Once again I go to research the name of a child who was abused to death and I see pictures of the person who is responsible for the death of the child, looking all sad and as though they are confused or not knowing what they did wrong. I ask over and over, WHAT ABOUT YOU CAUSING THE DEATH OF A CHILD DO YOU NOT UNDER STAND?!? When police responded to the home where Manuel Antonio Gonzalez was watching his nephew along with his own two sons, they were told the that Xavier had been playing with the hose and drowned accidentally. When a neighbor was asked to help to call 911, Manuel, who is Xavier's Uncle,  then ran to another home to get help:

"He was crying. He was like he didn't know what to do and had the baby in his hands
and he like fell down. He didn't fall down, but he went down on his knees and he was
telling Firefighters to help him"
Gaby Ramos

Larry Nunez, of the Phoenix Fire Department was called to the home at about 1:30 p.m. that afternoon. After seeing Xavier, it was determined that something was not right about the story Manuel was telling and the Firefighters called the police. Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson was told that Xavier had been playing with the hose and that the child had drowned in a puddle. Tommy noticed several injuries on the child that didn't seem right and when Xavier arrived at the hospital, it was determined that his injuries were consistent with child abuse. Police say that in the home they found wet clothing which was dirty with mud and what appeared to be vomit. The clothing was found on a washing machine, stuffed under some other clothing and that they also found a bloody towel in the bedroom where Manuel stayed. Manuel of course said he didn't know anything about any of these things. Xavier died while at the hospital.

One of the neighbors said that these children play outside all of the time:

"I think it's always a shock and nobody likes to hear about when children are
it's a surprise to us and it shocks the community"

Injured does not BEGIN to describe what happen to this innocent, beautiful little Angel. At the hospital, doctors found that Xavier had bruising between his thighs, tearing, a ruptured bowel and they found his stomach to be full of fluid. Manuel never admitted to sexually abusing Xavier and also said he never hit him.

Manuel Antonio Gonzalez, who was 24 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with first degree murder. In the state of Arizona, a parent, care giver or guardian who causes injury to or neglects a child causing their health to be in danger, is considered guilty of child abuse. If the abused is cause intentionally, it is a class 2 felony. The beating that Xavier suffered is considered intentional abuse, sadly, if only convicted of the child abuse charges and not murder, Manuel could serve as little as 10 to 24 years in prison.

I have searched for an obituary or a news article about this Angel's funeral and was unable to find anything.

A message from JesseGarciaReyes followed a news story I read:

"Xavier Becerra Martinez was my seconds cousin... And Honestly everyone in my
family right now REALLY HATES Manuel for what he has done... I wasn't at his
funeral today (10/24/12) but both my parents were there. They told me that they were
heart broken and couldn't bare to see him, I was told he has bruises on his face. I don't
like wishing bad things to Manuel, but I do hope he gets stabbed in prison"

UPDATE:

Today is June 12, 2014 and I have not been able to find any updates about court or sentencing in this case.

UPDATE: December 8, 2014 (Thank you Cat for sending me this update)

In July of 2014 Manuel Antonio Gonzalez plead guilty to first degree murder in the death of Xavier. In September of 2014, Manuel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. I would LOVE to hug all of those who got it right when choosing this sentence.

Prosecutor Neha Bhatia had told Judge Margaret Mahoney that Xavier's mother, Maricela Becerra- Rodiguez was hoping Manuel would be spending the rest of his life in prison, she did not want him to get the death penalty. Manuel didn't say anything in court and then he was taken away to the Arizona Department of Corrections where he will be living until the day he dies. JUST AS IT SHOULD BE!
