Jetseta Marrie Gage
August 25, 1994 - March 24, 2005
Find A Grave Memorial

Imagine you give your granddaughter medication, tuck her into bed, thinking she's safe and warm for the night. Now imagine you go to check on her and she's gone. I can't imagine what Jetseta's grandmother must have gone through in the minutes after discovering that her granddaughter, who suffered with Spina Bifida and was also mentally handicapped, were like. Jetseta's brother had seen her being driven away in the truck of what was thought to be a family friend, but turned out to be their worst nightmare.

Trena Gage began dating a man named James Bentley, not knowing that his brother, Roger Bentley, was a sex
offender. As it turns out, she didn't know that James, was also a sex offender who would sexually abuse her daughter, Jetseta for two years. REALLY? I can't believe I typed that just now. How does a child get abused by her mothers boyfriend for TWO years and the mother knows NOTHING about it? In 2004, James Bentley, who was 34 years old at the time, was indicted in November of 2004 on felony sexual abuse charges. On March 1, 2007, James was found guilty of six counts of child pornography and exploitation, in a different case. James was sentenced to 100 years in prison. That's the end of the story! You would think so right? WRONG!

Trena became friends with and some reports say she dated, Roger Bentley, the brother of the man who was in jail for 100 years for raping her daughter for two years. That makes sense, right? Why is it then that in March of 2005, an Amber Alert had to be issued when Jetseta's grandmother, Teresa Gage, discovered that the child was missing from her room? Because OBVIOUSLY Trena Gage wasn't in her "right" mind when she allowed this man into the life of her children after having dating his brother, the sex offender. Now, don't get me wrong, I am NOT saying that anyone should be held responsible for what James Bentley did, other than James Bentley, HOWEVER, had it been me, I would not be able to look at the face of the man who was the brother of the person behind binds for 100 years for molesting my child for two years. See what I'm saying here? More importantly, I would not be able to make my child look at the face of the brother of the man who had molested her for two years. This case stinks in more ways than one and there is no shortage of moments when I am reading, that I am shocked! If I seem to be being harsh on Trena, I won't apologize for that. I am having a hard time understanding the bad choices this mother made at the expense of her children.

Roger was working on Trena's van on March 23, 2005 and decided to take Jetseta and leave, Trena was at a college where she was enrolled at the time, in class. Teresa looked for Jetseta and when she didn't find her. she called her daughter and the police. An Amber Alert went out, though with mixed up information. Jetseta's body was found the next day inside a cabinet of a trailer which had been abandoned. With her hands and feet bound, this beautiful, little Angel, was raped by Roger Bentley and a plastic bag was placed over her head, causing her to suffocate to death. Trena buried her child and moved to Des Moines. In an interview she said she doesn't want to talk to Roger:

"What good will come of it. I don't have a lot of anger any more. I don't want to talk to them,
Roger or James"

Jenny Slight, Jetseta's Aunt had different feelings about the men who abused and killed her:

"I want to know why. Did she cry out? I would like to know what happened. According to the
autopsy, we know she put up a fight.

I agree with Jenny. I would want to know, NO, I would HAVE to know what happened to my child. I would need to
know her last moments, her last words, all of it. Yes, it would hurt me and probably haunt me for the rest of my life, but not knowing would also haunt me. To each his/her own I guess.

Jetseta's grandmother said:

"This is something you wouldn't get over fast. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy"

Roger Bentley, who was 37 years old at the time, was arrested, charged with the murder of Jetseta and sentenced to life without parole. I would like to shake the hand of all of those involved in this mans conviction and sentence. So often the sentence turns out to be a slap on the wrist, in this case, the sentence was EXACTLY what should be given to ALL people who abuse a child and or kill that child while doing it.

Trena says she now knows what to look for, knows the red flags and that she didn't know before that James and Roger were both sex offenders. The lives of the family have changed since the death of Jetseta, doors and windows are checked and locked and other children in the family are not allowed to even spend the night away from home at the homes of friends. Trena is dating a man she has know for 15 years though she said did a background check on him before starting the relationship and the family doesn't trust anyone any more.

One of the leaders in the investigation of Jetseta's murder was Charity Hansel, she said this case has changed her forever:

"Not a day goes by that I don't think of that little girl. It crippled me professionally and
personally. Every child abuse case chips away at you. It chips away at you as a wife, a
mother and an officer. Her face will be burned in my brain for the rest of my life. You don't

Charity said she had been one of the first responders at the trailer when a man who heard the Amber Alert called in  to police to say that he had shown a trailer to Roger Bentley a few weeks before Jetseta disappeared:

"Roger was still there when we got there. He was covered in blood. It was under his cuticles,
on his jeans. It was all over. He laughed at us. I knew after seeing Roger that she wasn't alive"

Charity says this was the worst crime she had seen in her 18 years working in law enforcement. After waiting for
a search warrant before they could enter the trailer and when they found her, Jetseta had only been dead a few
hours judging by the blood on the mattress, which was still wet. Charity was also working on the case against James Bentley and after both cases, she changed her main focus to deal with with internet crimes against children.

Trena moved herself and her children after loosing her job and her house:

"It was time for the family to make a fresh start. There were horrible memories there but also
good memories too. Her grave is there and trees planted for her by her elementary school. We
talk about Jetseta all the time and Leonna watches the video that was played at the funeral
that has photos of her. Leonna cries but then she's happy. They both remember her. She was
the big sister who used to read to them and play Barbies with Leonna"

Both Leonna and Ian are in therapy to try to help them in dealing with what happened to their sister. Ian still remembers watching his sister being taken away by Roger, that night. God bless him :(

Come look down on us and visit us okay Jet?
Loves-Loves-Loves Forever!!!!!

There were 300 people at Jetseta's funeral, unfortunately, relatives had to stick close to her mother and grand-
mother because rumors had started that they could have prevented what happened to Jetseta. While I don't approve
of how this mother behaved, I can't see blaming the Grandmother at all and I can't see ANYONE bringing this up
during a funeral which is a place to honor, respect, show love and say good bye to people:

"What really hurts i, there's some out there that believe the family could have prevented this.
But Jetseta was just being the girl she was. That talk, just adds to her hurt"
John Opala - Trena's Cousin

Teresa Gage was the only family member to speak at the service:

"We had beautiful times together and we had hard times. I'd say "Oh, I do love you more than
you ever know". You were my special girl, Jet. You would get mad and then later come back and
sit on my lap and say "I love you""

A woman at the funeral reads a note left for Jetseta.
