Judith Eva Barsi had a favorite prayer:

though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will
dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
At the age of five years old, Judith was already being taught how to be
an actress. Maria Barsi, her mother, was the one who took it upon
herself to turn her daughter into an actress after she was discovered
at a skating rink. The income his daughter could generate was a good
thing for her father, Jozsef Barsi. Income made by doing commercials as
well as movies such as "Jaws: The Revenge", the voice of Ducky in the
children's movie "The Land Before Time" and her last movie role, "All
Dogs Go To Heaven", allowed Judith to take care of her family,
providing them with a home and all they needed, this child was making
over $100,000. a year. Judith was such a small child that
at the age of ten, you she was
still playing roles of children as young as seven years old, it was
decided that she would start hormone injections to help her grow.
The director of "The Land Before Time", Don Bluth, said that Judith was
astonishing and that she was able to understand verbal direction in any
situation, he wanted to use her in other projects he had planned.
There was a secret in
the Bari home, Judith's father was abusing her and her mother and he
was an alcoholic. Jozsef would constantly threaten to kill his wife,
daughter an himself and his drinking had caused him to get arrested for
drunk driving on at least three different occasions. In December of
1986, after an altercation with Jozsef, Maria called the police to
report that he had been physically violent with her and had threatened
to kill her and her daughter and burn down their home. Police were
unable to find any signs of abuse and Maria ended up not pressing
charges, but it was reported that after that incident, Jozsef stopped
his drinking, but not the threats and abuse.
Peter Kivlen reported that Jozsef once told him that he would kill
Marie and then Peter asked:
"If you kill her, what
will happen to your little one"
Jozsef responded by saying "I gotta kill her too".
Judith was so afraid of her father due his behavior such as when she
was going to be in the movie "Jaws: The Revenge" and would be traveling
to the Bahamas to film the movie. Jozsef told Judith, before she left
that if she did not come back, he would find her and cut her throat,
Judith believe him since he was holding a knife to her throat when he
An incident was reported where Jozsef didn't allow Maria to see a
telegram that informed her of the passing of one of her relatives in
their home land of Hungary, Jozsef was afraid that Maria would take
Judith and never come back to the United States. Judith told a friend
that her father had thrown pans at her, causing a bloody nose. The
stress of the abuse soon took a toll on Judith and she began to gain
weight and her behavior changed to the point where she pulled out her
eyelashes and began to abuse the family cat by pulling out its
whiskers. After witnessing Judith break down during her audition for
"All Dogs Go To Heaven", her mother too her to a child Psychologist who
after noticing that Judith was suffering from physical as well as
emotional abuse, made a report with Child Protective Services. Maria
was able to hold of CPS by claiming that she was going to divorce
Jozsef and move with Judith to an apartment that she had rented.
Maria's friends tried to get her to divorce Jozsef, but Maria never did
which would turn out to be a big mistake. The last time anyone saw
Judith alive was on July 25, 1988 when she was riding her bicycle.
Jozsef shot Judith in the head that night as she slept, then he shot
Maria and for the next few days he stayed in the house and when a call
came from Judith's agent, he said that he had planned to move out of
the house and only needed to tell his little girl good bye.
Jozsef didn't move out, he poured gas on Judith and Maria's bodies and
then went in to their garage and shot himself in the head. A neighbor,
Eunice Daly said that she was shocked by the explosion and then she saw
smoke coming out of the home and she though that he had finally killed
them. Firefighters were unable to save the home and the inside was
On August 9, 1988, Maria and Judith were buried side by side in the
Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. Mother and daughter were
buried in white caskets and for many years their graves went unmarked
until donations were raised and they finally had their markers. Each
marker bears the words "YEP YEP YEP, one of the lines that Judith said
in the movie, "The Land Before Time".
