JaQuinn Brewton

Find A Grave Memorial

A 911 call was made claiming that a child had fallen out of a window. Paramedics rushed to the scene only to find that the call had been false and the Godmother of the child was now saying that he had fallen down the stairs:

"I'm devastated that it's not my child, first of all and it happened in my care. I'm really feeling real bad
about this situation"
Nadera Batson - Godmother

Nadera Batson, Godmother to JaQuinn and her boyfriend, Marcus King time had been given the task of taking care of JaQuinn when his mother, who has six children, ended up in a homeless shelter and turned him over to them in March of 2011. Apparently, JaQuinn was mentally challenged and it soon became apparent that his life was about to change for the worse. JaQuinn was subjected to abuse from the couple over the next three months of his life. JaQuinn was kicked, punched and hit with different objects and was burned on his legs, feet and bottom with a blowtorch. This all took place within months before the 911 call came:

"The little boy took all the pain he could until he couldn't take it any more and succumbed to his injuries.
It's one of the saddest cases I've seen. It's very sad, I mean I have 22 years with the Police Department,
one of the saddest cases I have seen. We saw the pictures of the little boy and it's heartbreaking"
Police Captain - James Clark

JaQuinn was in a coma and would never wake up again, dying two weeks later. A Medical Examiner stated that JaQuinn's injuries were not something that could have happened by falling down the stairs and his death was ruled a homicide. Seriously, did Marcus and Nadera honestly believe that anyone would think a child could get burns of that nature by falling down the stairs? Marcus King, who was 23 years old at the time and Nadera Batson  who was 22 years old at the time were arrested and charged with the murder of this little gift from God.

In August of 2011, Nadera was in court sitting next to her lawyer while the District Attorney, Bridget Kirn told the court room about how she and her boyfriend had abused JaQuinn by repeatedly beating and burning him until he fell in to a coma and died:

"He was small and he was frail and he was brave. He didn't have that many words,
but he could feel pain and

he did"

It had only been a few weeks since JaQuinn had died and Nadera had already rejected a plea offer that would allow her to walk free serving 30 to 60 years, while on the table was life without parole. Marcus had already plead guilty to third degree murder and was set to testify against Nadera and would be sentenced at a later date. Bridget Kirn told the court how the beatings of this child had begun almost immediately, fists were used as well as hot water, belts, shoes and hairbrushes, Bridget said he had been beaten head to toe.

Pointing to Marcus, Defense Attorney Lee Mandell wanted people to see how big he was stating that he was 6' 7" and weighed 220 pounds:

"Look at Marcus King, he's huge. Then you tell me if you think he is the one inflicted these fatal
wounds to this child"

Lee Mandell told the courtroom that it was crazy for anyone to suggested that Nadera had intentions of killing JaQuinn when she so lovingly took him into her home and agreed to care for him. Lee went on to ask the jury to not allow whatever sympathy they had for JaQuinn cause them to ignore the evidence that was lacking in the case against his client. In  video taped testimony a neighbor talked about the abuse he had heard, though never reported to the police, he said he had sent a text message to his landlord only 13 days before JaQuinn died:

"I would hear lashes or whips. Whipping noises, yelling, crying and combination of all of those"

Hason said the beatings happened at least four times a week and he would wake up in the middle of the night with them trying to muffle the sounds with loud music. Marcus testified that he rarely hit JaQuinn, but Nadera had hit him every day.

In December of 2013, Nadera Batson, who was 25 years old at that time, was sentenced to 28 to 57 years in prison after being convicted of third degree murder. In court, Common Please Judge Barbara A. McDermott stated that 99 out of 100 Philadelphia citizens would agree that what Nadera had done to this child was pure evil.

I am unable to find any information for a sentence in the case of Marcus King.

UPDATE: January 18, 2015

In August of 2013 Nadera Watson was 25 years old when she was convicted of third degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment and possession of instrument of crime, which was a small blow torch that was used to burn JaQuinn on his bottom.

Nadera had turned down a plea deal that would have given her a sentence of 30 to 60 years and Prosecutors said they were seeking a lengthy prison sentence.

In December of 2013, Nadera was given a sentence of 28 and a half to 57  years in prison.

Marcus King had plead guilty to third degree murder in August of 2013 and was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
