Khaiden Dwight Michael Lee Hockett
October 11, 2011 - February 5, 2012
Find A Grave Memorial

In February of 2012 a 911 call went out for a child who was no breathing. Paramedics arrived at the home of 21 year old Amy Hockett and her 24 year old fiancÚ Joseph Pierson. Four month old Khaiden Hockett was transported to Reid Hospital where Doctors pronounced him dead. On February 6th and autopsy was done and first reports said that Khaiden had died of malnutrition. Joseph and Amy were immediately listed as suspects in his death:

"I'm being accused of hurting the only thing that gives me reason to breathe. I love that baby.
They can accuse whoever they want because I did not hurt my son. I would never hurt my son"
Amy Hockett

Joseph and Amy were both arrested and charged with felony neglect as well as murder and Lawyers were asking a Judge to rule for separate trials and a change of venue. Lawyers were given the time they needed to file their motions. I am not able to find much about the trials or the actual results of the autopsy report other than what I have already said.

In February of 2013 during the trial, Prosecutor Mike Shipman said that Joseph and Amy neglected Khaiden by not bathing him, changing his diapers or feeding him and that he had lost weight quickly as a result of the neglect. Family members had asked Amy about the weight loss and she said she had taken him to the Doctor and they were doing tests. Mike Shipman didn't said that Khaiden's death was a direct result of the neglect he had suffered:

"He died because the people who were supposed to care the most for him didn't. Nobody was
there when this little guy died alone in the back room of the house"

Joseph's lawyer said that Amy had lied and told Joseph that Khaiden was under a Doctors care and that he had died from not receiving needed medical attention, not from malnutrition:

"The entire web of lies started with family members, all people with more intelligence than
Joseph Pierson. They were able to the situation better than Joseph Pierson and they all
bought it"
Michael Dean

In March of 2013, having been found guilty of murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent, Amy Hockett was sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Joseph was found guilty of reckless homicide, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and neglect of a dependent, though he was also found to be mentally ill. In May of 2013, Joseph Pierson, who was 25 years old at the time, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, though Prosecutors had asked for 45 years:

"Based on the evidence, I can see where the jury would see Amy Hockett being more
responsible for Khaiden's death. He is mildly mentally handicapped and I think that made
a difference in what the jury felt"

The Judge said that this was the most horrific, unimaginable crime in the history of Wayne County. It was reported that Khaiden's skin was sagging and looked like leather, his skin was covered with sores and dirt and he was dehydrated and malnourished and at just a few days before he would be four months old, Khaiden weighed only six pounds two ounces upon his death when he had weighed eight pounds seven ounces at birth:

"You knew right away that he had been starved"
Mike Shipman - Prosecutor

The home that Khaiden lived in was said to be filthy, with dirty diapers, trash and piles of clothing every where. In Khaiden's room, Police had found feces on the wall and the fridge had no food in it. Amy insisted that she had taken Khaiden to the Doctor several times due him having trouble keeping down the formula she was trying to feed him. Records indicate that Khaiden only saw a doctor one time since his birth. Amy never showed any remorse for what happened to this little Angel and the Judge spoke about that in court. Amy's Lawyer said that she does regret what happened:

"I think she truly regrets the loss of the child's life"
Pat Ragains
