Yaseen Ege
2003 - July 2010

Yaseen was seven years old and was beaten on a regular basis by his parents, for not being able to memorize the Koran. Before he went to school Yaseen was taught the Koran, when he returned home from school Yaseen was taught the Koran. Yaseen's mother, Sara Ege, believed that if her son could memorize the Koran it would boost their standing in the community. Yousef and Sara wanted their son to become a Hafiz, a term which means "Guardian" and indicates that a male has memorized the Koran.

Teachers at Yaseen's school were worried about him since a few times his handwriting was not what he normally would do and he seemed to be using his left hand when he was right handed. Yaseen said that his right hand hurt because his mother had hit him with a ruler.

On the day he died, Sara kept Yaseen home so that she could teach him more of the Koran, her frustration with her son was growing because he was not learning as quickly as she thought he should. For months, Yaseen had been being beaten in his home and he had suffered internal injuries as result of those beatings:. Yaseen collapsed and even then he kept on reciting what was expected of him, the best he could. Yaseen seemed to be tired and his mother said that he kept repeating the same verse over and over so she left him alone. Checking on Yaseen a little bit later, Sara found Yaseen on the floor having convulsions and then he died.

Sara didn't call Police, instead, she decided to get rid of her sons body in an attempt to cover up what she had done. Sara used BBQ starting fluid to start a fire in the home and set her sons body on fire and while investigators at first thought the child had died in the fire, they soon learned that he had not. Pathologist were able to figure out that Yaseen had broken ribs, a fractured arm, a fractured finger as well as other injuries and Sara had lighter fluid on her clothing.

"I was getting more and more frustrated. If he didn't read it properly I would be very angry,
I would hit him"
Sara Ege - To Police Officers

At her trial in May of 2012, 32 year old Sara admitted that she had hit Yaseen on the back with a stick and she said that her husband was a violent man who had beaten her and her son and that he and his brother were the ones who had killed Yaseen. Sara said that Yousef had told her if she did not say she was the one who killed Yaseen that he would kill her.

Sara collapsed in court during questioning about the death of Yaseen. While Yousef said that he had not allowed his wife to beat their son and he was not responsible for his death, Sara said that the Devil had spoken to her and told her to beat her son for not memorizing the Koran. Sara said she loved her son but her home was filled with evil spirits she called "Jinn" and that she was forced to admit to killing him by her husband and brother-in-law. Sara and Yousef had been released to the home of his brother where she says he beat her in front of his wife:

"He was angry and started hitting me in front of his wife. He said that I should tell the police
that everything that had happened to him, I had done it. He threatened to kill me if I did not
say to the Police what he said. He said I should take all the blame and say the medication
I was taking has done this to me and say that the Devil has told me to burn the body"

Sara had been to a Psychiatric unit and was there during her trial and was claming that voices of the Jinn, who live in her home, speak to her:

"They say the same thing. That my life is not worth living and I will be dead soon"

It was discovered that in 2003, reports were made to a Women's Safety Unit about domestic violence in the home, these allegations were never reported to Children's Services. Several reports were also made in 2007 and while several agencies had tried to help Sara, nothing was ever put in place as far as a plan. The Judge said:

"The violence that you perpetrated on your son was not confined to one day. I am s
atisfied that, over three months, you beat him on a number of occasions, often with a
wooden pestle. His injuries must have caused him a good deal of pain. In my judgment
Yaseen was subjected to prolonged cruelty"

Sara Ege was convicted of murder and sentenced to 17 years to life in prison. Yousef was cleared of any charges in the death of Yaseen.
