In January 2009, Herbert and
Catherine Schaible were members of a church which practiced faith
healing. What that means is that all faith is put in God to heal anyone
who is unfortunate enough to get sick within the congregation. Kent,
their two year old son was one of the unlucky ones. Kent became ill
with Bacterial Pneumonia and rather than take him to the hospital to
get help and save his life, Herbert and Catherine prayed that God would
heal him. I guess they were not smart enough to figure out that God
invented Doctors to be His helpers. For all that this little Angel wen
through at their hands, a Judge saw fit to only give this couple ten
years of probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. A
condition of their probation was that their remaining eight children
receive regular check ups at the Doctor and that they were to be
immediately taken to for treatment if any of them became ill.
That should have been easy enough to handle, however, just a few months
theirs, Brandon, who was only seven months old, died from the same
thing, Bacterial Pneumonia though he also suffered from dehydration and
step throat. In keeping with the teachings of their church, the First
Century Gospel Church, the Schaible's once again did not seek medical
attention for a child who was sick even though they were still on
probation for the death of Kent.
Herbert and Catherine were arrested and charged with third degree
murder, involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy and endangering the
welfare of a child and were facing 40 years each for the death of
Brandon. District Attorney R. Seth Williams said:
"Instead of caring for
and nurturing him, they ultimately caused his death by praying
his body instead of taking him to the doctor"
Catherine was able to stay home on house arrest while Herbert went to
jail. Six of the seven remaining children, ranging in age from four to
18 years old, were removed from the home and placed in foster care,
though the 18 year was over the age where that child could be put in
In February of 2014 Herbert, who was 45 years at the time and
Catherine, who was 44 years old at the time were found plead no contest
in the death of Brandon. After sentencing the couple to up to seven
years in prison, the Judge said:
"I have never seen in
my career, a case like this"
Herbert said that he knew that he and Catherine had messed up by not
following the instructions of the court and taking Brandon to get
"It won't happen again.
I am extremely sorry for what happened to my two sons"
It won't happen again? It should NEVER
have happened the fist time and much less the second time. These two
people should be in prison for life and NEVER
allowed to have children in
their home again.
Assistant District Attorney Joanne Prosecutor was quoted as saying that
this case haunts her.
