Aadyn Overton
- July 5, 2013

On July 5, 2013 a call came in to 911 about two children who were unresponsive. Paramedics arrived at the home of Towanda Reaves, a grandmother, to find her grandson Aadyn unresponsive, Aadyn was pronounced dead about an hour later. Also in the home was Aadyn's sister who was unresponsive, but she was saved.

Towanda told Police that she had put her grandchildren to bed about 8:00 p.m. and checked on them at around 2:00 a.m. and then she had gotten out of bed at about 4:00 a.m. to turn off the air conditioner and that is when she realized that Aadyn was not breathing so she called 911. Both of the children in the home later testified positive for the drug Methadone and the little girl was given several doses of Narcon which is a drug meant to reverse the affects of other drugs. LAter the truth came out that Towanda had put the children to bed after rubbing Methadone on their gums and then she left the home and went to a party.

In September of 2014, Towanda Reaves, who was 51 years old at the time, was convicted of of second degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, first degree child abuse and two counts of second degree child abuse and she was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Towanda said that while she was responsible for Aadyn's death, she never meant to kill him. Speaking to the Judge. Towanda said that she was very much responsible for the death of Aadyn:

"I'm not good at speaking, but the kinds that I never meant to hurt the children"

Members of Towanda's family spoke in court saying that they believed that Towanda never meant to hurt the children and the death of Aadyn was an accident.

Towanda's Lawyer, S. Simone Mollack said that there had been no malice in what had happened and asked the judge to be lenient on Towanda saying she lived for her grandchildren, her home was always clean and she woke up every morning to take Aadyn to the bus stop so he could go to school.

The Judge said:

"This is not the intentional killing of her grandson, but those who think this is some
form of tragic accident misunderstand the case and misunderstand the jury's analysis
of it. This is murder"
Judge Timothy Doory

Judge Timothy Doory brought up the fact that Towanda had told different stories about what had happened. The Judge had been given a news paper story in which was told the story of how Towanda had been trying to get clean and the story showed that she had been living off of public assistance, family help and she was working as a prostitute. Judge Doory spoke of how Towanda only wanted to go to party that night and her last concern was her grandchildren:

"She did such a thing because that day, she was interested in the part and
didn't want to be bothered"

Towanda had received 30 years for second degree murder as well as 30 years for child abuse resulting in death and those two sentences would be served at the same time while a ten year sentence for child abuse resulting from the abuse of Aadyn's sister would be served after the initial 30 years.
