Mattisyn Jolene Blaz
June 25, 2013 - August 16, 2013
Find A Grave Memorial

The story of Mattisyn Blaz is one of those stories where there is not much information available. The facts are there, short and to the point, but buried inside stories about Chile Protective Services and their failure in the lives of children.

Mattisyn was born on June 25, 2013 to Matthew and Jennifer Blaz. Two weeks after her birth, Matthew came home drunk and while Jennifer was holding Mattisyn, Matthew grabbed her hair and threw her onto the kitchen floor and took the baby from her. Jennifer called the Police which prompted Matthew to give the baby back to her.

The day after that incident, CPS was at their door. Matthew plead guilty to assault and her was ordered by the Judge to take anger management classes and he was ordered not to be around his wife. At some point, Matthew was alone with Mattisyn at his home and reports say that he spiked her like she was a football causing injuries that would lead to her death.

Matthew would say that Mattisyn had fallen but the Medical Examiner was able to determine that she had died from abusive head trauma that was not an accident. Matthew was 32 years old when he was charged with the deliberate homicide of his eight week old daughter:

"Any time there's a child injured or killed it's difficult obviously on the family members,
but it's difficult on the responders are well and the investigators as they proceed through
a case like this. So it's hard on everybody involved in a case like this, as well as the
medical people who have to deal with that kind of trauma also"
Sheriff - Ed Lester

Matthew being held on $500,000. bond. In November of 2014, Matthew Blaz, who was 33 years old by that time, was in court for sentencing after having been found guilty:

"The 15 below weather Thursday morning was nothing compared with how cold
hearted you , Matthew Blaz, were on August 16, 2013. This is the most horrendous
crime that I've seen on the bench"
Judge Kurt Krueger

Prosecutors had said in court that after Matthew had caused the injuries to his daughter, he didn't even try go get medical help for her for over six hours. Matthew had originally said that his daughter had been injured after a neighbor boy had dropped her.

A jury deliberated for about two hours before finding Matthew guilty on deliberate homicide in May of 2014. Defense Attorney Deirdre Caughlan had requested that the Judge leave the possibility of parole open for her client. Judge Kurt Krueger didn't agree with what she wanted and he sentenced Matthew to life in prison without parole. Matthew didn't speak in court, however a representative from the state probation, also a Parole Officer who had helped in the investigation said:

"He's a threat to the community due to his violent nature. He went from abuse to
striking and killing his daughter within two weeks"

A small, beautiful little urn holds the ashes of Mattisyn in the home of her mother

I am struggling a bit with this obituary, listing Matthew as a loving parent, loving parents don't abuse their children, much less kill them.
