Lanceton Dane Hollenbecks

Find A Grave Memorial

So often I see people say "justice was served today", in cases where a child has died at the hands of those who were supposed to love, protect and nourish them. Children die EVERY day due to child abuse and a child abuse death is NOT given justice, IN MY OPINION, when the person who causes that death is given a sentence that allows them to walk the streets a free person some day.

Skye Reece was 21 years old when she stood in court, crying, after being sentenced to "life" in prison. I can't figure out what was SHE crying about? SKYE'S life wasn't over, she would be eligible for parole in 38 short years, where Lanceton Dane Hollenbecks, the child she killed, would NEVER grow up, never play baseball, never have a first love, never get married and never have children of his own. Lanceton's father would have to raise his brother, alone.

On February 11, 2012 Police were called to a home where Skye Reece, Ryan Nowlin, Lanceton and a four month old baby lived. Lanceton was 17 months old when Police were told that he had been found unconscious after falling out of bed while playing, his head was supposedly bumped very hard. Skye told Police that she had heard a loud thump, but Lanceton had not cried after falling and hitting his head.

Lanceton lived with Megan Hollenbecks who is his mother, his stepfather and big sister, however, on the weekends, he went to stay with his biological father and his girlfriend. On February 11, 2012, Ryan kissed Lanceton goodbye and headed to work, like he had done so many times before. Ryan received a call only 20 minutes later telling him that he needed to get home immediately. Ryan came home to Paramedics doing CPR on his son. Lanceton was life flighted to Tulsa and found to have massive brain injuries and he was pronounced dead after spending one day on life support.

The Medical Examiner found that Lanceton could not have been injured so severely after just falling off of the bed, especially since there was carpet on the floor. An autopsy showed that Lanceton's head had been crushed and his skull had a fracture that measured more than four inches in length with two smaller visible cracks. It was said that Lanceton's injuries were consistent with a 30 foot fall and he had no brain activity at all. Lanceton's mother and father were there, holding, kissing and telling him goodbye as life support was removed and slipped away, quietly Home. The Medical Examiner said that Lanceton died from blunt force trauma to his head and his death was ruled a homicide.

Skye turned herself in three days after what happened and she was arrested and charged with first degree murder in the death of Lanceton. The Assistant District Attorney said that the story Skye told didn't add up to what the autopsy found since the bed wasn't very high off of the floor and there was carpet:

"It's a difficult situation to deal with"
Ben Loring

In September of 2012, Skye entered a not guilty plea in the case. In December of 2012, she was found guilty and given her sentence of life with parole after 38 years. To me, that adds up to no justice for Lanceton.

Neighbors of the couple were shocked when they found out what happened, some were angry and some said that they had never noticed anything wrong with the family, though the children were rarely seen outside:

"It made me mad. I was ready to go beat someone real good
because that baby deserved better than that."Id' say, a pretty
typical mother. She was just bringing them back and forth, in
and out of the house, like I said. I never really heard any fighting"
Aretha Rodgers

"And I just look at my son and I don't think how anything could
be done to a little baby, so innocent. I told my mom, I've got
to do something, you know, if it was my son I'd hope somebody
would do it for me"
Jayme Chuckluck

Jayme organized a softball tournament to help the family of Lanceton.

Skye cried in court after the verdict of the 11 man one woman jury was read. Three days of testimony had shown the truth of what happened to this little Angel. District Attorney eddie Wyant announced that Skye would have to serve 38 years before she would be eligible for parole. Let's hope that a Parole Board NEVER lets her out. Bikers Against Child Abuse, a group of bikers who stand up for children, was there for the entire trial in order to help raise awareness of child abuse.
