Arianna Taylor Smyth
July 15, 2014 - July 5, 2016

We often hear Law Enforcement, Government officials, Child Protective Services and others saying how "this" case was the worst they have ever seen. In the case of Arianna Taylor Smyth, Camden County Prosecutor Christine Shah was no exception to repeating or feeling this.

A woman named Amber Bobo, who was 26 years old at the time, started dated a man named Michael Disport Jr., who was 22 years old at the time, when they picked up her daughter Ariana, who was almost two years old at the time, from her father, Rob Smyth. Amber and Michael took Adriana to their home in Gloucester, New Jersey at around 6:00 pm on July 4, 2015. Michael took Ariana first to a park where the plan was for he and Ariana to get to know each other, he then took her to the fireworks display all while Amber stayed home claiming she was too tired to go with them. Amber had only been dating Michael for two weeks at this point.

Upon returning to the home, Amber put Ariana to bed in the bed they slept in together and then went out to watch television with Michael. At about 11:00pm, Amber went to bed and left Michael alone to sleep on the couch. Amber work up the next morning at around 7:00 and Ariana was not in bed with her. Amber found Ariana on the couch, wrapped in a blanket and found Michael outside smoking a cigarette. Around 9:00am Amber unwrapped Ariana from the blanket and found her daughter was dressed different from the night before and she had bruising on both sides of her head. Michael denied knowing how the injuries were caused saying she must have fallen while they were in the park. Amber said they should take the child to the hospital and Michael said they should just put ice on the bruises and let her sleep some more.

At around 11:00am Amber decided to give Ariana a bath and at that time she discovered even more bruising on her back and genitals. Amber would later say she took so long to notice because Michael had been the one to change Ariana's diapers that day and that he had insisted on doing so. Amber asked about the bruising again and once again Michael denied knowing how it had happened. Michael was able to convince Amber not to take Ariana to the hospital because he didn't know what people would think. Michael obviously he KNEW what people would think and he didn't like it because it was the TRUTH about what he had done to this little ANGEL!

Ariana was dressed and a hat was put on her head to hide the bruises, even though it was 80 degrees outside and the couple decided it would be a good idea to take her to the mall. At around 12:00pm Ariana began to vomit and was then taken home for another bath and a change of clothes so they could return to the mall. Michael and Amber stayed at the mall with Ariana until around 3:30pm at which time they left and returned home. Amber then noticed that Ariana's eyes were rolling up into the back of her head and she vomited for the third time that day only this time she became unresponsive. Michael tried for a third time to get Amber not to take the child to the hospital saying she just needed a nap because she was tired. Michael told Amber if she took Adiana to the hospital, she would never see him again.

Thank God that THIS TIME Amber decided that her child was more important than some guy she'd started dating two weeks ago. Ariana was taken by ambulance, unresponsive, to the Cooper University Hospital. Once there, it was discovered that Ariana had blood and other fluid on her brain as well as swelling consistent with sexual assault, a broken arm, fluid in her lungs and urine in her abdomen. Ariana was taken into surgery where Surgeons tried twice to find brain activity, however, when none could be found, Ariana was taken off of life support and died on July 5, 2016 at 6:26 pm.

This is the story as it was told to Judge John T. Kelly in front of Rob Smyth and many other family members and friends who cried and hugged each other for support during the proceedings. Christina Shaw had told the story of what happened to this little Angel while Michael sat in court closing his eyes and shaking his head in disbelief as she spoke. Michael acted surprised many times during the proceedings as the story of how Ariana had suffered and died was told by Christine Shaw.

The only time Michael, who sat alone without an attorney, even spoke was to say who he was and that his family was working on getting an attorney to represent him. At the request of Christine Shaw, bail was set at $1.5 million. Michael had no previous record, however, the severity of this crime and due to the fact that Michael would receive a life in prison without parole sentence due to state laws in regard to convictions of murder involving sexual assault. Amber Bobo would also face charges in the death of her daughter. Charges of endangering a child were filed in connection with the death of Ariana.

Upon leaving the courthouse, Rob and those with him did not want to speak with the press about what happened.

"This crime is every parent's worse nightmare, to have a child stolen from their own
bed and then victimized by an adult in the most despicable way imaginable. There is
no more serious crime than this"
Christine Shaw

Michael Disporto was charged with first degree murder by Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Amber Bobo was charged with second degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Ariana was to be remembered with people being asked to wear blue, on what would have been her second birthday. Destiny H. is the cousin of Ariana and she helped to organize the celebration and at the time she announced it, there were about 700 people who had responded and would be wearing blue:

"We want to celebrate her life by asking family, friends and strangers from all over to
please wear something from the movie "Frozen" or that color blue for this precious
baby's birthday"
Terri S.

The time for the memorial was to be 8:30pm on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Barnegat Docks and those who would not be able to attend were asked to send a picture to be used in a collage:

"She knew almost all the songs even though she was only 2 years old"
Destiny - Of Ariana and the movie "Frozen"

While Rob Smyth was said to be in no condition to talk to anyone, he did leave a message on Facebook:

"My world, my life, my everything was Ariana Taylor Smyth who loves everyone
that has been in her life. She was an amazing baby and has made me the person
I am today. Just want everyone to know that she really loves everybody that was
in her life and she appreciates the love and support that everyone has been
showing me and my family"
Rob Smyth

A Go Fund Me page was set up as a way to help pay for funeral expenses. As of today's date, the Go Fund Me page is still up and has raised $12,580 of a $10,000. amount.

In June of 2017, Jason LeBoeuf, Attorney for Michael Disporto Jr., was in court asking that the charges against him in the death of Ariana be dimissed. In the courtroom that day were Michael's family and friends who were sitting in the second row of Judge John T. Kelley's courtoom.

The Prosecution alleged that Michael sexually and physically assaulted Ariana which lead to her death and they said he convinced Amber NOT to take the child for medical help. A court date was set for August 21, 2017 for Jason LeBoeuf to argue whatever motions he had which included dismissal of the charges, changing the venue of the trial and suppressing several pieces of the evidence and statements presented against his client. Amber had agreed to testify against Michael as a part of a plea deal, one that NEVER should have been offered...IN MY OPINION! Amber got off easy with a plea, in May of 2017, of guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. Amber's sentence for her role in the death of this precious Angel was a shockingly short three years in prison. Amber had been facing up to ten years before she agreed to a plea deal.

Family members of Ariana made it clear that they held only hatred, anger and disgust for what she did and that she would never be forgiven for her part in taking this child away from them, that no sentence would be long enough for her to serve:

"My happiness is gone. I don't smile. I look for Ariana every day, everywhere. My
home is filled with memories of her"
Jennifer Smyth - Paternal Grandmother

A statement was read in court by Robert B. Smyth, at the request of Robert B. Smyth:

"I feel dead inside. She is responsible for the death of my child and she took away the
greatest person in my life"

Robert's Aunt, Christina Smyth spoke of the moment Robert had to make the decision to take Ariana off of life support:

"They will never get to see her grow up into a beautiful woman"

Robert's mother, Jennifer, spoke of how he had been planning to file for sole custody of Ariana because he believed she was in the care of an inattentive mother. She extended an apology before saying that the sentence of three years for Amber had been a joke. I hope she didn't mean that apology because I'm sure we're all thinking the same thing and I would make ZERO apologies for that:

"She saw evidence of what he did to Ariana, but, "Hey, let's go shopping""
Jennifer Smyth

Jennifer added that, Arianna's Paternal Grandfather had said that Amber made a choice to leave her child alone with Disporto, even though she'd had reservations. Apparently, Amber had asked in an online social group if she should allow the man she was dating to get to know her child by spending time alone with her. In the social group, Amber was strongly warned NOT to allow this time alone and she ignore it.

Judge John T. Kelley said to the family that he was unable to erase what had happened to Ariana. It was stressed that Ambers lack of criminal record and her agreement to testify against Michael outweighed a need for a longer sentence which they had requested.

Michael denied the charges that he is responsible for the death of Ariana and he was being held at the Camden County Jail in protective custody. This is why I always shake my head when people insist that child molesters/killers will get what's coming to them when they get to jail/prison. A child molester/killer has as many rights in jail/prison as anyone else and WILL be protected, there is also the fact that someone has to be willing to face life in prison for murder or other charges if they want to "beat him up" or "kill him".

Charges that Michael wants dropped include dismissal of the indictment and barring testimony from Dr. Stephanie Lanese who is a Pediatric Doctor who specializes in child abuse. Of course we can't have specialists, who know exactly what they are talking about, testifying in court cases. We should allow just ANYONE off of the street to give their "professional" opinion of incidents happening in ALL legal matters. (I just rolled my eyes and shook my head in case you were wondering".

Jason LeBoeuf will also ask that evidence he is under the impression was seized in violation of Michael's rights, be suppressed. Statements made by Michael to the Police are also being questioned with the belief that he was never read his Miranda rights as well as pictures of Ariana using the grounds that jurors may be prejudiced by those pictures. It is Jason LeBoeuf's hope that if the case ends up at trial, it will not be held in Camden County. Jason LeBoeuf hopes he will be able to prove that media coverage, among other things, will cause problems when trying to find an unbiased jury.

In November of 2017 Amber tried to get early release from prison. Amber would be in jail for at least 18 more months before being considered for any type of release. How could someone who was only going to serve three years even THINK they deserved early release after what happened to this little Angel? I hope she serves EVERY minute that she is supposed to serve before getting out.
