Anays Chenal Carimbocas

Find A Grave Memorial

Anays Chenal Carimbocas suffered terribly at the hands of Jose Luis Gonzales-Dominquez, who was 21 years old when he beat the beautiful little Angel, to death. Anays was only four years old when her mother, if you can call her that, Crystal Carimbocas, came home to find her child in pain and breathing shallow and did NOTHING, for 90 minutes, to help her. Anays died while on the way to the hospital, five hours after she was beaten by her mothers fiancee. When he was booked in the Maricopa County Jail, Jose was charged with failing to render aid, resulting in death. Detective Steve Berry said that a homicide charge would most likely be sent to the County Attorney's office at some point.

An autopsy showed that Anays suffered from multiple skull fractures, a lacerated liver, contusion to her pancreas, torn blood vessels and numerous bruises. Jose of course lied and said that Anays had been hurt when she fell at the pool in the apartment complex where they lived. The medical examiner ruled that the child had died from her injuries which could not have been from a fall and said that her death was a homicide.

EMS crews had responded to the home after being called and could not save Anays:

The ER doctors take a look at her and she's got a lot of bruises on her body and it looks suspicious,
so they notified officers"
Steve Berry

Jose had told police that he took Anays, a four month old baby, a six year old and an eight year old to the swimming pool and had come home about 6 p.m., claiming that Anays had fallen and hurt herself while they were there. The manager of the apartments said that after reviewing the video surveillance of the pool area, he found that Jose and the children had not been there. Jose said that Anays was complaining of pain in her back so he had given her some medication that his mother, who also lives in the complex, had given to him. Anays was having a hard time breathing and he said that he gave her rescue breaths and called her mother. Crystal came home about 8 p.m. and did not call anyone or take her daughter to the hospital to get help. Some neighbors were trying to remember what time it was that they had heard children screaming and crying. Jose told police that he was a Mexican National and had been living the United States illegally for about six years.

Steve Berry said that Jose and Crystal were both refusing to cooperate with the investigation and that Anay's
three sibling had been placed in Child Protective Services custody.

In June of 2011, Crystal Carimbocas, who was 27 at the time, was indicted on child abuse charges. Crystal
knew that Jose had been beating on her four children and she did nothing to stop him or protect them. It was
reported that her children had told her that Jose was beating on them and her six year old daughter had even told her about a time when Jose had punched her in the face, still, Crystal did nothing for her children. Anays had also told her mother about Jose slamming her head on the table and her mother told the children that they could not tell anyone or the children would be taken away from her. How sad that now one of those children has been taken away permanently due to their mother wanting to protect this man.

In July of 2010, the police had received a call from Crystal's mother stating that her granddaughter had told her Jose had punched her in the face. Crystal protected Jose by telling her children to say that a toy had been thrown at her face. When again, in September, police were called because Anays had a black eye as well as a broken vessel in her ear and a hematoma on her scalp, Crystal lied and said that Anays had fallen into a table while playing with her sister. Upon examination, a doctor said the injuries were severe and thought they were a lot for having fallen into a table, though he said it could have happened.

The children were questioned by the police and said that they were told by Jose and Crystal not to talk to anyone about the beatings he was giving the children and that as soon as he had moved in with them, the beatings started and they were daily. The children were told the police would take them away from their home if they knew they were getting hit. Anays had asked her mother to call police and stop the beatings, she did not and it resulted in the death of Anays.

In August of 2011, Bill Montgomery, the County Attorney, announced that he would seek the death penalty against Jose:

"The decision to seek the death penalty is the most serious decision any County Attorney can
make. In any given case, I weight the appropriateness of the death penalty and then determine
whether the death penalty is a just punishment for the crime committed. In this case, if the State
successfully proves beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty as charged, the jury
will then have the duty to consider the imposition of the death penalty"

While looking for pictures of this precious little girl, I found none. I found plenty of the two people who killed her and they thought nothing of it. Of course they are looking all sad and upset in their mug shots. I can't tell you how tired I get of people killing children and then looking upset in their mug shot pictures. Don't abuse and  kill children and you won't get caught doing it!

Today is June 7, 2014 and I am unable to find any information about court dates or sentences for these people.

UPDATE: August 14, 2014

Crystal Carimbocas was found guilty on August 13, 2014 on two counts of child abuse. I hate that she was found guilty ONLY of child abuse, when a child is dead because of her failing to protect her, by putting a man first in her life instead of her children. Crystal would be back in court on September 18 for sentencing.

Doing a search today for Jose, I found this:

Court date: 8/14/2014 @ 10:30 Case #: CR2011006332
Case event: Jury Deliberations (001) Camera ruling: Pool Camera Approved/Certain witnesses prohibited
Judge: Warren Granville Prosecutor: Jeannette Gallagher
Defendant: Jose Luis Gonzalez-Dominguez Defense attorney: Joseph Stazzone
Defendant2: Crystal Carimbocas (002) Defense attorney2: Rebecca Felmly
Case notes: Jury for each defendant. Dual Jury Trial is expected to last 12 weeks. Gonzalez-Dominguez was charged with 1st degree murder and 5 counts of child abuse. Carimbocas was found guilty of 1st degree murder and 2 counts of child abuse.

Thank you to Floyd for sending me this update.

UPDATE: September 29, 2014

I received an update from some people who said they were on the jury and I am told that Crystal was also found guilty of first degree murder.

Thank you to Jack for this update.

UPDATE: December 6, 2014

In August of 2014,
Jose Luis Gonzales-Dominquez was standing trial for his part in the death of this little Angel. Jeff Kirchler was Jose's Defense Attorney and he wanted the jury to make sure they weighed all of the evidence in this case:

"Please be patient and please keep an open mind. The evidence will show this man
is not guilty at the end of the trial"

Jeanette Gallagher was the Prosecutor and she told the jurors that even though Jose claimed to have taken Anays to the pool that day and she had slipped, fallen and been injured, an autopsy showed she already had the injuries:

"She didn't fall at the pool. She didn't get those catastrophic injuries playing
with her sister. What happened to her was no accident. It was child abuse"

Jeanette told the jury that even though Anays was eventually taken to the hospital, she was already dead by the time anyone called 911. Jeff said:

"He didn't know she had a fractured pelvis. While with Anays on May 13, he didn't
know to seek medical attention"

Jose Luis Gonzales-Dominquez was 24 years old when he was found guilty on five counts of child abuse and first degree murder in the death of Anays. Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty for Jose if he was found guilty.

I want to thank the anonymous person who sent me the update below, which prompted my search for more information:

"I was a juror on the Jose Dominguez trial. The day after the mother was convicted, Jose was convicted on all charges. All but a few of the aggravating circumstances were also found, therefore the trial went to a penalty phase. I'm sad to say that we hung on the death penalty, but this was not an easy trial or an easy choice. I was for death, and I respect the opinions of those who were not. I may not agree, but in such a difficult choice when it's YOUR hand on the switch, it's understandable that someone may not agree"

"From what we were told, he was sentenced to 69 years on the five child abuse charges. They are retrying him on the penalty part, that is the last time they can do it. If they new jury hangs, or if they go for life, then it will be up to the judge if he gets life without parole, or life with parole after 25 years"
